Here are three life lessons he learned from Shri Ratan Tata:
Ratan Tata promised to make a car available for one lakh rupees. Although manufacturing costs increased substantially, when the Nano was launched, the standard version was offered at a dealer price of one lakh rupees because, as Ratan Tata explained, “A promise is a promise.”
Ratan Tata decided to enter the passenger car market, facing insurmountable challenges. This led Mr. Ford to ask, “When you donโt know anything about passenger cars, why did you start the business?” However, Mr. Tata’s motto in life was, “I donโt believe in making right decisions. I take decisions and then make them right.” He lived up to this dictum, as Tata Motors’ Punch has become Indiaโs top-selling car this year, surpassing Maruti Suzukiโs Wagon R.
Following the terrorist attacks on the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai, Mr. Ratan Tata, then chairman of Tata Sons, and Mr. R.K. Krishna Kumar, then vice chairman of the Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL), formed a trust to provide relief not just to the employees of the Taj but to anyone affected by the attacks. The trust also aims to help and rehabilitate those recovering from such tragic events in the future.
